The 7 x 7 Rule

Effective leadership is built on clear and consistent communication. One powerful strategy that leaders can use is the “7×7 Rule”: communicating a message seven times in seven different ways. But how can leaders apply this method without overwhelming their teams or consuming too much of their own time? Let’s break it down.

Why the 7×7 Rule Works

Studies show that people absorb information differently—some through reading, others through listening, and some through visual aids. Additionally, repetition strengthens retention. A message delivered once is often forgotten, but when communicated multiple times in varied formats, it sticks.

The challenge? Many leaders feel that repeating a message multiple times is redundant. However, employees may not hear or fully absorb a message the first time—or even the fourth. The 7×7 Rule ensures that everyone gets the information they need in a way that resonates with them.

Applying the 7×7 Rule Without Overload
  1. Use Multiple Mediums
Deliver the message in different formats:

    • Verbal conversations (meetings or one-on-ones)
    • Emails
    • Videos
    • Memos
    • Text messages
    • Infographics or slides
    • Audio messages or podcasts
  2. Space Out the Communication
Instead of bombarding employees all at once, spread the message out over time. This reinforces the key points without overwhelming your team.
  3. Tailor to Different Learning Styles
Some employees prefer written communication, while others engage better with visuals or discussions. By using diverse formats, you ensure everyone has a chance to absorb the message in their preferred way.
  4. Refine and Reinforce the Message
Each repetition provides an opportunity to refine the message. As a leader, you’ll naturally clarify and enhance the communication, making it more concise and effective, as well as varied and less redundant.
  5. Adapt to Team Changes
Organizations are dynamic—employees leave, new hires join, and roles shift. A message communicated last year may need to be reintroduced to keep everyone aligned. The 7×7 Rule helps ensure continuity and understanding over time.
Leadership is Communication

At its core, leadership is about guiding and aligning people toward a common goal. The 7×7 Rule might feel repetitive from the leader’s perspective, but for employees, it increases clarity, retention, and engagement. Instead of seeing communication as a box to check, embrace it as an ongoing process of reinforcement, connection, and strategy alignment.

By implementing the 7×7 Rule thoughtfully, leaders can ensure their messages not only reach their teams but truly resonate and drive action.
